Make most roads 15mph

Apart from the Seward Highway, and highway leaving Anchorage, all roads should have a 15 mph speed limit and should be designed to accommodate that (ie trees and traffic calming measures to induce low speeds).

Do you really need to get there that fast? How much time have you spent fucking around on a scrollable form of media today? I think slower (and smaller roads) would allow for more *pleasant* infill construction, more housing, and generally a more pleasant city. If we actually dedicated some road space to proper bike/pedestrian and spent a bit more money on decent public transit we could have a much nicer city.

Random image I found a while ago that shows more social interaction on less trafficked roads. Don’t ask me for the source, I don’t remember.

Why must we cover every inch of ground in concrete? Why can’t Anchorage-ites imagine a city where your upscale coffee shop or coffee hut opens onto a field of grass and trees near an meandering bike path instead of a gravel pit 10ft from a 50mph stroad?

Democracy in action!

Wait until Dunleavy gets to chat with the big brains at DOT! Maybe he’ll have something to say about the unhelpful imbalance of statewide infrastructure planning where it’s assumed that everyone will have a nervous breakdown if they have to walk more than 20 ft from their car.

wtf is thissss.

If Anchorage is really serious about the whole Vision Zero thing, reducing speed limits is actually the only way to make that happen.

I just want to be able to pause my nordic ski/mountain bike/run and do this…
